Statement
Since March 2021, including the color series study in C, I have held ten exhibitions through July 2024.
The earliest exhibitions were attempts at landscape photography composed with the bare minimum of elements.
In these exhibitions, horizont refers to what is known in studio photography as a "white cyclorama"—a seamless white background.
It's a setting in which subjects emerge from a backgroundless space, imparting an ambiguous quality akin to a psychological landscape.
The initial motivation was a simple one.
At a time when I didn’t know what to photograph, I gave myself an assignment: "Show me a photo you think is interesting."
The only conditions were that it be a monochrome print and that the subject be the world itself.
What do I find interesting? What do I want to see? It became clear what I needed to do to satisfy the client—myself.
At the same time, that client turned out to be quite demanding, so I had to relearn photography from the ground up.
So, what am I finding interesting now?
I’m trying to construct photographs that face the external world directly, without using internal or abstract terms like “mental image.”
These are photographs that do not create personal emotion, sentiment, or narrative. And that is an extremely difficult thing to do.
A perfectly square frame tends to become monotonous, but with thoughtful arrangements and use of spacing, that dullness can be avoided.
I’ve taken color photographs as well, but they often feel too emotional.
It seems that the abstraction of monochrome is better suited to my approach.
If I find something interesting, I might even tell a small lie—but it’s the kind of lie found in magic tricks.
If you feel deceived, but still enjoy the experience, then I couldn’t ask for more.
